Questions to Ask the Interviewer During a Phone Interview
We all know that we should have questions for the interviewer prepared… right? Well if you didn’t know, now you do! Having questions prepared reiterates your interest in the job. It also helps you and the interviewer understand if this role will be the right fit for you.
Remember – interviews are not only for the company to get to know you. You also want to get to know the company and its people. If you don’t feel comfortable with the people you are interviewing with, the culture of the company may not align with what you are looking for. It’s a two way street!
- Why is this position vacant?
- What skills and experiences would be beneficial for someone to succeed in this role?
- How would you describe the office culture?
- What does a typical day look like in this position?
- What are the biggest challenges facing someone in this position?
- What is your (the interviewer) favorite part about working for XXX?
Last but not least, ALWAYS ask what the next steps are:
- What are the next steps in the interview process?
This is obviously not an all inclusive list, but it is definitely a start to let the interviewer know you are serious about the position. Be prepared to ask about 3-5 questions. If the interviewer already covered one, skip to the next question. You should get your answers to about half of these questions ahead of time if the interviewer is doing their job right.
